[Editor's Note: This issue is now in its' final form, but the explanatory text has been retained to maintain its' integrity.]

***About this Issue:

This on-line issue of the TTimes is part of our ongoing effort to take advantage of the interactive nature of the Web. It's intended to be a 'work in progress,' giving you a chance to see the 'guts' of an issue as it's being developed.

"Why?", you ask. Well, having been doing this darned thing on-line since '93 or so, we figured we might as well start to take advantage of the ubiquitous availability of Internet content in order to allow you to see what usable content is available during the development process. After all, the 'you never know what you might hear' peeps shouldn't be afraid of any 'you never know what you might read' situations if it means that we can give you the timely information you've told us you want even faster than before.

That being said, we hope you will bear with us as we continue to develop this new format, and we welcome you input on how well (or unwell?!?!) you think it's going!  And so, on to the contents.......

EDITORIAL

So, where do we go from here now that the children are growing up? It's a timeless question that rears its head now as the original children of the rave mature - many of them even having families and children of their own. I see such a massive diversification out and about....electronic beats dominate the American, as well as the world wide soundtrack. I live in a most interesting place - it's a cool intersection that fuses modern destinations in the midst of a historic countryside…well, what's left of the countryside anyway.... For the past 7 years I have always enjoyed the diverse sounds emanating from the cars as they waited at the intersection. For the first few years, rock and roll dominated, with club sounds predominantly confined to Friday and Saturday nights. Slowly though, the infiltration began, first with lots of major crossover like things played on radio, ---------------now, believe it or not, I hear mixes, and it's becoming more and more techno every week! Hmmn, wonder what will the kids of the growing ranks of parental ravers will be into?

Oh my oh my……call it 'be careful what you wish for' or 'you wish it - I dish it'… The current state of play in the places that "matter being heard and appreciated by the people who matter" (Who would be John and Jane Clubravepartyperson) is making a noticeable shift away from the smooth glittery pulsating sweep of Trance into the huge beats and surging energy of hard house - now doesn't that just beat all, I mean it's just gone and done it…brought back the feelings (and a lot of the sounds!) of rave circa 1991……….and the tech-house moniker has bestowed a smiling nod of hipness to DJ's that have stayed true to their course of vision, the feeling for the essence of the beat and all that it may disguise and transform it's way thru the musical spectrum is now appreciated and acknowledged as a genre itself…haah aah ahahahah ok, well, actually it is kinda funny, but cute…a hodge podge of styles given a name. Ok, whatever works, and I know that the thing called techhouse does! People love it..it's fun/deep/sexy: all these things…and when mixed creatively, and not staying to straight a course…you too can be a tech-house icon!

Now, I'd like to add something here…since it is so easy to make music now-a days, and relatively cheap to have it out there for the world-at-large to hear, then it's time to do a bit of soul searching when it comes to quality vs. quantity….there is almost too much out there, I myself probably spend over $400 a month on new releases, and they are all, well, for the most part, wonderful stuff…and there's a lot more I'd like to buy. But then there's the other stuff. I was sent a CD recently by a person who shall remain nameless…the sounds were all over the place from track to track…and each one of them sounded so canned, so formulaic, dated and unoriginal it took nearly every fiber of my being to listen to the whole thing while Rob just begged me to "please, for the love of god, please make it stop". I wanted to tell this person that, but knew they had a very high opinion of themselves and their music. So, I present my rant to you, dear reader, in hopes that it will inspire a higher order of thinking, of creating, and therefore, make the world a better place, one swell track at a time ;->

Place the e-mail rant here-
"I think the artist has the basic knowledge and sufficient talent to generate some killer material...in general, I would have to say that he needs to develop his own sound more, like, what is he bringing to the table that makes his tunes different than what-ever else is out there? More manipulation of the sounds also needs to be done, especially increasing the impact of the beats -- he really needs to make the beats his own. I dunno, but I kinda found the 'canned' nature of many of the sounds off-putting. A track has to have individuality, depth and progress....it can borrow influences from the past or present, but must always be inspired by the creator's own vision. The people who listen to, buy, and spin electronic music are a picky and, for the most part, an intellectual bunch...they are very demanding of their music...they want it to make them feel something...to do something to their mind, heart, soul and body.

My suggestion to him is to go to a local underground record store and check out a bunch of stuff...In techno, people like Justin Berkovi, Oliver Ho, Template label, Detroit stuff like Robert Hood, Underground Resistance, Dietrich Schoenemann, Thomas Brinkman...... I listened to the CD several times, and found interest.

>>>I have some insight into some of the tracks, and offer my thoughts to you. But, before I do, I need to tell you a bit about the perspective from which I work:

I'm known as a fairly insightful analyst, and spare no feelings when I work in any kind consultative capacity. It's constructive criticism - but that's the key here - it's an honest critique based on my long experience in this scene. I don't often offer this kind of input because providing it requires a fair amount of time and energy on my part. Of course, I do this for the love and respect of the music.<<<

Pl 58 6/12/00 pl's 55,56,57 all cd shows

-KOSMA - NEW ASPECTS IN THIRD STREAM MUSIC - NR. 1 OF 5 - ODESSA RMX - INFRACOM===a flowing stream of consciousness altering beautiful music to make the mind swoon and the body feel good vibes…..jazz, drum 'n bass, house influences all combine to make this a heady stew indeed!

-ALDERANDELIUS - SELECTED MEMORIES FROM THE ASTONISHING HEREAFTER - SKAM===This side of this grey 7" is kinda difficult to describe, but I'll try! It's deep, low, smooth…kinda primal and tribal with some long synthy violin sounds, laughter and vocal drop-ins, lotsa change-ups going on different pathways, yet retaining a spacey, mystical quality.

-PUBLIC INFORMATION FILM (REGIS) - HERE AND NOW (ENGLISH VERSION) - LINO===This almost sounds like something you may have heard before, or not…perhaps it was in a dream, or perhaps your subconscious took it in while you were walking past a construction site on a day when you were feeling a bit spacey. Deep throbbing bass, pulsing and quavering sounds and manufacturing noises make up this witches brew.

-RYME TYME - TEKNOID - A - NO U TURN RECORDS===He's back! Drum 'n Bass that's firm but friendly J Smooth flowing deep goin that uses and fuses all that this man has been about and a fine taste of what's to come.

-LEFTFIELD - SWORDS - TWO LONE SWORDSMEN REMIX - HARD HANDS/SONY===Oh my yes yes yes…can I say again how much I admire TLS…in their original production and remix work they just keep giving and doing and creating - new structures, patterns, thoughts, feelings. On this remix of "Swords' they take it to the D&B, but like nothing you've really ever heard before….nice! The other remixes

-MAGNETIC MEDIA - BAD SEED - LIFTIN' SPIRTS RECORDS===Take a twirly little sample from an 80's pop/soul duo add, some (perhaps sampled cut and looped) ah'ha's and lay it all over and under a stepping slightly dark D&B track that's got a bit of a tech-step attitude and you got this cut that rips it!

-HIVE - ULTRASONIC SOUND - DILLINJA REMIX) - VORTEX===The sounds of Sex are all over this one hard mother of a Dillinja remix that tears this puppy up with some crashing percussion….dig those wild bongoes!

-SUBCODE - VIBRATOR - THERMAL===Moans and groans accent a pulling groove of intricate percussion work on this deep sexy D&B strain

LONDON ELEKTRICITY - WISHING WELL - HOSPITAL=== If you don't know this label, you should…it's stuff for everyone interested in the edge of the blend, in where the music can take you if you let it.

ARMAND VAN HELDEN - FREEKEN/KOOCHY - ==== freeky sctuff, not bad, pretty pumpin….

-EVERLASTING THROBBING POPPERS - PULSING REMIXED BY DAVE AUDE - RAW NERVE RECORDS===Holy jeeze, this one is raw! The beats will draw you in and then a deep voice starts up talking and yer grooving, then he starts talking about this throbbing red mebrane, then it, well, um, just goes on gfrom there…heh heh. Great for shock value and for the hard house crew that likes it hot.

-SUPERPOWER - IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR - "MAA" BELL & DAVE "THE WAVE"
-FABULOUS 23'S - OVER THE LIMIT - XS=== wild ridin again with the Smitten posse! Joe Young delivers 2 powerful puncheson this Smitten sublabel that deliver quite a wallop! 'Over The Limit' has strong, deep rubbed raw beats…a male vox reps add flavor as the acid comes in and it goes off a rockin with it, and it gets more and more! This one mixes great! 'Y2K' starts a strumming, then beats rise in stealthfully and they're big'uns! Long eerie strings slide thru, then careen wildly as tapping fingers on your spine percussion help this puppy get all worked up in a big ass horny vibe…in the second half, the acid really takes control!

-LESTER FITZPATRICK - SMASH TRAXX VOL.I - FLIP MODE - MINIMALISTIX=== This Chicago native lays down the sound and feel of a hepped-up-on-the-party-vibe kinda toddeling town tracks on this respected label. Boom Boom, here comes a 'Spider'! Squirp, trill, swish, hit 'n rumble 'n tumble with funky movements, a slight tribal feel, inlaid acid and a hypnotic vibe - he varies the sounds really well on this one. 'Flip Mode' is really bangin Big! Shootin squirts of acid and cool percussive backround trails garnish this steady rockin sockin stomper. 'Tariyah' is a bangin was 'n roll with lotsa fun trix, step to it & shake dat ting! 'Drums Of War' goes tru Chicago stylee! Whoo whoo whoo - goes aneat siren as you have your way dancing to this step 'n stop fun.

-DANNY CASSEAU - SMASH EP - FINKER - SUBSOUNDS=== Come along on Mr. Dannys Wild Ride! Llike Mr. Toad's Disney one, Casseau creates his world of stylish psychedelia mayhem thru the use of complicated programming of machines. Unlike it however, is that you can plop this puppy on down anywhere anytime and let the chaos and gleeful mayhem ensue! In facet, it's highly recommended that you do year it in a variety of settings to experience it fully (as you should with any fine piece of techno). In 'Finker' a long strummed & knocking intro leads to big Bangin beats& a rise in intensity of the set & a rise in the power of of the beat - it gets into quite a funky lather with lots of spacey stuff 'n stuff J I Love 'Flanker'! it's very deep sexy and cool…a jazzy explorative groover. 'Cupunk' goes a turning and a twistin with deep horny grooves and a seriously bassed beat…it's steady stepping really gets 'wound up' about 1/3 inwith this really cool sound! 'B-Hill' is housey and breaky that goes to the undercurrent that morphs with the big betas that rise up and take over.

-KELY - ACTIV X - TRIOP - FUTURE FRONTIER=== This is an amazing record, Kelli Hand really rocks this one to the max! # 4 tracks totally rate the coveted 4/4 stars in my system, the other one 'Avtiv X' is useful as a tool - it's more of a hornier, loopier version of the first track on that same side, do that cool-double-copy-dj-thing! The track that it adjuncts so nicely, is 'Triop' has great moving beats with a subtle yet forceful percussion that builds from a positionof strength and evolves hypnotically. On the A side, '10 Inch Nails' has bangin and stompin percussion that's all tribally, horny and funked…then it rubs it around real goo as long deep sounds blow on the lotion makin it hot. In A2, 'Martians' sharp mental poppin cut-offs accentuate a rolling deep bass groove - metallics then come in to play to really bring the energy way up…an intense & profound experience.

-SUTEKH - NUDRU - (SAMPLER 4 ARTIST)FORCE LAB == Force gets expewrimental and clicky and deep…Sutekh continues his manipulations in his excellent contribution to this comp.

-BENJAMIN BRUNN - FAHRSTUHLMUSIK - B1 - === I use this record again and again…is it tech-house? I dunno, it's kinds deep, kinda quirky, and alllll good!

-DOCTOR ROCKIT - INDOOR FIREWORKS - CAFÉ' DE FLORE/EAU D'ERIK - LIFELIKE === Fabulously wonderful fantastic music to watch the stars, be a star, or dream by….

This here e-zine contains the most recent playlists from the Internet broadcast, "These Technotic Times". Our format is underground electronic music - ground-breaking new stuff in the genres of Techno, Electro, House, Funk, Chill-Out, Experimental, IDM, Jungle/D&B, Trance, Acid, and other unclassifiable stuff that catches our finely-tuned ears! These lists are reported in the weekly CMJ (College Music Journal) in the 'Internet Broadcast' section, and appear frequently in many other major & independent magazines, zines & e-zines.

'These Technotic Times' comes your way via RealAudio (5.0 and G2 compatible feed) on Monday nights 8pm-10pm ET. Go to http://www.technotica.com for the direct stream...there is also a link to our host at http://www.collegemusic.com that also has the info and stream.
