Hey There, Hi There, Ho There !
C'est moi, Linda Leigh/Dj L3, with the August '97 edition of ...
The TECHNOTIC TIMES!
Well, here we are, in the home stretch of the Summer season. The
new releases continue to slow down in that time-honored August tradition,
as lots of folkes take some personal time........so, come along, gentle
reader, as I guide you 'round the humid corridors of my mind, cause when
it comes to music the water's always on for tea, baby, and it's boiling!
DJ's INVADE A.C.
The 1997 version of the DJ Times DJ Expo is rapidly approaching...August
25th thru the 28th at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ...4 days and nights
packed with all the stuff of Dj dreams!!!!! Jim Tremayne, editor of DJ
Times, speaking about the Expo, says the ultimate goal of the confab is
to 'serve the Dj on every need...to provide ideas for them to take with
them into the following year.' And on that tip, there'll be lots of seminars
on a wide variety of topics impacting the Dj market on all levels - from
the Mobile jock to the Mix show Dj - including Internet networking and
remixing workshops. There will also be the usual massive-like exhibit hall,
with 150 booths loaded up with the latest and greatest gear including Pioneer
(who always debut their newest secret weapons for the dance floor and beyond
at the Expo).
And, if like that isn't enough for ya (aside from the fact that you can network with over 3,000 like-minded souls), there will be some most excellent parties -- and who knows better how to party hearty than Dj's (hey, we're professionals!)...What a line-up of entertainment! Slammin' live acts and Internationally known guest Djs spinnin their hearts out for ya at the nightly fun fests include: Shaggy (Virgin) performing along with Djs Glenn Friscia and Mr C (whose club "The End" in London just recently garnered another 'Best Club' award) on Tuesday, and Jackie Christie and Danny Tenaglia spinning Wednesday, with Kevin Aviance performing. I'll be there, along with (restless)Rob and you better be too...Hey, catch a whiff of the Rave panel discussion Wednesday at 2pm which I'll be part of and say Hey-Ho!
MORE GATHERINGS
Other important gatherings coming up are the CMJ Music Fest Sept
3-6 in NYC, the Amsterdam Dance Event ( http://www.amsterdam-dance.nl )
October 15-18, and I've also heard some whisperings about something good
going down in Detroit. There's also 'How To Start & Run Your Own Record
Label' at The New Yorker Hotel in NYC Sept 27, and after you do that then
you're gonna have to start 'Building Your Team' at the A&M Chaplin
Sounstage, Los Angeles, Ca. on October 14.
Orlando! Home of the New NMS? Let's start a rumor!
GOIN' COMMERCIAL WITHOUT COMPROMISE
It's not surprising that lots of people in the biz are interested
in how the 2 big electronic tours, Big Top & Electric Highway, will
come off. Which brings me to the topic of commercialization of the scene
and respect............................... Respect! As the popularity of
electronic music grows, will 'garage raves' be tolerated by the locals
like their predecessors, the garage band parties? So wot is a rave, anyway?
It's gathering and communing with the beats. The smiling people, the acceptance,
the intrigue, the power, the scope, the talent, and the music are a force
to be reckoned with. If you have ever truly given yourself up to the music,
then you understand. With this in mind, I suggest that if you, or someone
you know is planning one of these shin-digs, you plot out the flow of music
for the night to create a wonderful tapestry of stimulation. An important
facet of event planning and promotion is often overlooked when dj's and
acts are placed in performance order...does the music clash or compliment
the preceding and following acts or dj's? Are things set-up so that the
music goes on continuously during any 'down time' for equipment/band changes?
The mind set of your patron is tres importante! This stuff demands a Good
Vibe be maintained!......
AROUND THE WORLD
And talking about a tapestry of stimulation and good vibes, wowza,
mega cool kudos and congrats on the successful run of the music and fun-filled
flotillas of the Street Parades that went off so very well in Zurich and
Brighton and, of course, the massive Love Parade in Berlin, bringing thousands
of people closer together.... Will we ever see something like this stateside?
Well, we can remain ever hopeful!
USA REKKID NEWZ
Domestic USA releases...what is going on here? :0 :0 :) WoW! Hot
production is going on all over the States, with a growing number of new
talents putting out their efforts onto vinyl and CD's, and distributing
it themselves. The fever is spreadin' Ma!
HOORAY 4 HARDCORE!!!!!
Man, I'm seeing it with my own eyes, people MOSHING to Hardcore/Gabber
Techno!!! Well, I prefer the limb flail personally and my elbows are pointy,
so you'd better be careful! I love this stuff and there's spurts of greatness
out there and I've been playing it a lot more recently and it's being eaten
up!!! So, if you think I'm the only one with a 'split-personality', then
you had better check out Mr. Omar Santana, cause with his dual trip hop
(Tricked Out) and Hardcore (H2O) personas, He's got it going on...Keep
it up Omar!!! One of my Favorite labels/distributors in the whole world,
PCP/PCD scoped me this triple CD package of Hardcore called 'PCP presents
The Hardcore Champions'. If you want a real dose of the good stuff, do
yourself a favor and reprogram your brain with this bath of bombastic beats!!!!!!!!!!!
It offers '3 levels of Hardcore' and I challenge you to experience them
all in 1 sitting and survive...well, you might survive but... you may never
be the same again (hee hee).
HARD TECHNO (THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!)
If hardcore isn't your cup of tea, then perhaps it's that hard uncompromising
driving techno that does that thing to you that feels really good and makes
you go all nuts like and punch the air and cleanse your soul... Well, if
that's the case, help FUTURE FRONTIER celebrate it's 1 year anniversary
and 10th release by checking out the most awesome Subsounds #10 double
12" with K-Hand re-mixes of Argonics 'Force.' YoW! The Different Dance/Paradiso
peeps are doin it up right with parties in Nice, France and up-coming blow
outs in Luxembourg and possibly in Germany!
LATIN SOUNDZ
Ahhhh.... last Zummer, I had a sense that this Zummer would sport
a strong Latin feel.... And lucky me, I wuz right, and I've been enjoying
those soulful sounds all through the warm months! So, what elements can
I conjure up now that I'd like to hear by next summer... Hmmmmm... think
I bury my toes in the sand in Atlantic City in between the meetin 'n' greetin'
and playin' those nickel slots while I'm sippin' a complimentary martini,
and I'll speed my predictions to yah all in the next Technotic Times.
(September's ish is going to be phat and fat, I promise!!!!)
A HEALTHY PROGNOSIS FOR THE REKKID BIZ...
'The Record Industry Annual Survey' confirms that many of the music
industry's top companies had an excellent financial year. The survey reveals
that 12 of the top 20 companies posted their highest ever operating profits.
Among the companies well into the black ink were Sony Music, Virgin Records, Warner Music, BMG Entertainment UK and Ireland, HMV, Britannia Music, EUK, Disc and Vital. Well, we'll all do what we can to keep the ball rollin'!!
Music -- it's your best entertainment value!!!!!
